TABLETOP FILMING

Table top film opening: we film and start editing

Today,  in media we filmed an opening sequence. We put a black sheet over a couple of tables, and we strategically placed some items around the table. We have studied the opening scene in to kill a mocking bird and Delicatessen, this helped us have an idea on how to move around the objects and where to add the titles onto the screen. we  filmed from a birds eye view and slowly moved down the table and we had 'actors' hands on screen moving objects about.

PREP Write up an account of what you did in the lesson. Start your post by copying the information from the PREP post (about the research that you did). Then describe your filming. Add a photo if you wish.

Today we filmed an  action scene, we added the action scene onto the title scene, and we edited it onto it, then we edited the credits onto the title screen and added backing music.

FILM OPENING CONVENTIONS

the Title of the movie appears and it credits all the people who worked on set. the films genre is conveyed by how they set out all the credits on various bits of clothing and reflections in the mirror, and the bright lighting shows its probably a more upbeat movie rather than a horror. there is a piano playing a  steady tune throughout and a clarinet adding some beat to it. this opening scene wants to make us carry on watching because of the use of the butcher trying to hit a person hiding in a bin, and by the close up we get of him we can see the butcher is rather happy about, with an evil smile.

the movie  credits all the actors over clips of ordinary things like a whistle and a pocket watch, and a box with crayons in that the girl is using to draw pictures while she hums along, the title of the movie is revealed by the young girl drawing over it. The genre of the movie is presented by the use of the sound of stringed instruments and a piano and the young girl humming and the ordinary things out of a box, this suggests that is going to be  more of a family movie or about a family. this makes the audience want to keep watching because it seems like a happy movie watching a family.

CUFFS

  • Which characters start to reveal more about themselves?
we start to see more about Ryan's life, during lunch we see him smiling in the café and referred to as the 'best babysitter'. We also learn that Ryan is a widower, and we see his son skipping school, and Ryan gets out to tell him off, this shows that its quite hard for him right now and that he has to do everything.

We also learnt about Jo, we learn about her dog and how he's in swimming therapy. we also get the idea that she has a history with the boss, when she asks him out, she references their past time together.

HOW SOUND CREATES MEANING

PREP Watch the first 10 minutes (after the title sequence is over) of The Avengers on Clickview. Analyse how sound is used in the extract to create meaning. You can use any part of the opening scenes - both the opening scene at the seaside at Little Bazeley or the scene in Emma Peel's flat

  • first identify an example - use terminology such as diegetic sound, non-diegetic sound, dialogue.
  • then give the example - " Little Bazeley is constructed as a seaside village through realistic sound codes such as..."
  • "One example of how sound is used is when Steed makes conversation with Emma Peel..."
  • then explain what meaning is created - "In the exchange of dialogue between the fisherman and the undercover agent who arrives from the sea they talk about...... which creates suspicion and comedy because....."
  • "Steed's dialogue reveals his accent and shows that he is..." "What Steed says to Emma Peel suggests that he feels in charge because...." /  "Emma's comment about the coffee and cream show that..." / "Emma's throwaway comment about having just finished a scientific article shows that..."

the avengers:

At the start of the extract there is suspenseful music playing as someone walks out of the sea in a bag. This shows that this is strange. The sound of the seagulls shows that its a normal day and the calm tone the nan used when speaking to the fisherman shows that this is normal for them, showing the spys are amongst the village. There is non diegetic sound playing throughout the beginnig scenen when they walk out of the sea.
